Building your deck
We will build you a safe, solid deck.
We understand that a deck is a load bearing structure that could potentially bear many people at one time.
Every care is taken that the correct type and amount of fixings are used.
Similar in concept to the foundations of a house, the secret to a strong and durable deck is a good solid sub-frame.
We have discovered when removing old decks, cases of entire sub frames being 'balanced' on loose bricks, piles of broken slabs, polystyrene blocks, and even paint tins!.
We believe that your deck should feel (and indeed be) as solid and safe as the floor inside your house.
Unfortunately, we have found that the subframe of a deck is a common area that inexperienced (or unscrupulous) deck installers/fitters sometimes make errors or treat it as an opporunity to save money, as once the boards are laid you will never know (until it's too late) whats under your deck.
Details such as the correct joist spacing for timber or composite decks are important, along with use of 'noggins' (see our jargon buster) to add stability and strength to your deck.
Additionally, we see many decks where the subframe is laid directly on the ground, therefore allowing moisture to seep into the frame and causing it to rot.
We will only use treated building grade timber joists to construct your deck sub-frame (stress graded and dry graded) and we always endeavour to source our timber from local, ethically aware suppliers (endorsed by the FSC).
Before committing to building a deck for you, we will usually ask for a site inspection to discuss your requirements, and advise you on the location/aspect, size, shape and type of decking.
This is the time to decide on the placement of your lighting, handrails, ramps, steps, features etc.
