Fencing FAQ's

Answers to some of the more commonly asked questions about fencing

Post & Panel Fencing

The most popular type of fencing that we install. Post and panel fencing consists of removable, individual fence panels slotted or fixed into concrete or timber fence posts. Correctly installed fence panels should sit on top of a concrete gravel board or timber gravel board to preserve the panel from drawing up moisture from the ground.

Standard pre-made fence panel heights are usually 3ft, 4ft, 5ft, 5.5ft & 6ft, although with the right experience and tools, fence panels can be cut to size if required.

For fencing on soft ground, as a rule of thumb, a fence post should be sunk approximately one third of the height of the fence into the ground and concreted in.

Usual gravel board heights (concrete or timber) are usually 6 inches or 12 inches, so dont forget to take that into account when planning your fence.

There are several types & styles of pre-made panels and gravel boards to choose from ranging from overlap panels, closeboard (featheredge) panels to decorative part part lattice panels.

Post and Panel Fencing

Closeboard / Featheredge Fencing

Closeboard fencing or featheredge fencing as it's sometimes known, is a strong attractive option of fencing which some people prefer due to it's unbroken facade. It's constructed by setting separate fence posts (usually 100mm x 100mm) at regular intervals, then attaching cant rails, then lastly attaching the featheredge boards individually to form a continuous 'run' of fencing.

Closeboard runs are sometimes useful when there is a gradient on the land and a 'stepped' fence is not favoured.

Closeboard fencing usually works out less expensive to install as its relatively fast and simple and the materials are slightly cheaper than pre-made fence panels.

One disadvantage of closeboards fencing runs is that should your fence become damaged for any reason, its not as simple to repair as a post and panel fence. In our opinion a closeboard fence is slightly less robust than post and panel fencing.

Most building developers tend to use closeboard fencing as its the cheapest option to install.

Post and Rail Fencing

Post and rail fencing, also referred to as stock fencing, is a cheap and effective form fencing. Most commonly used to define permanent boundaries, for agricultural puposes, to form a temporary boundary or for animal / pet enclosures such as dog runs, chicken runs or horse paddocks.

Wire mesh can be affixed to part or all of the fence to form a pest or animal proof fence.

For some properties that back onto farm land, woods or open land, destructive animals such as deer, rabbits, badgers or foxes can be a problem.

Post and rail fencing with mesh attached provides a solid animal proof boundary without disrupting a view.

Picket Fencing

Picket Fencing

Picket fencing is a popular form of decorative fencing that is realtively cheap and easy to install. It is available in various styles but most commonly 'round top', or 'pointed top' pales.

Picket fencing can bought as a pre-made panel (usually 1.8m long) or constructed in a similar fashion to closeboard fencing by sinking the posts, attaching the cross spars then affixing the individual pales.

Trellis Fencing

Trellis is usually just used for screening purposes or to allow climbing plants somewhere to grow but can be used just as effectively to form an attractive fence.

There are many styles of trellis panel available now days but if it's for fencing make sure its a heavy duty trellis panel. Pre-made trellis panels are usually available in 1ft, 2ft, 3ft,4ft, 5ft and 6ft heights and are usually 6ft wide.

Trellis can also be affixed to the top of a new or existing solid fence to provide extra height, privacy and aesthetic appeal but without blocking or losing light.

Another good use for trellis fencing is to attach trellis panels to an existing plain fence. This can transform a garden or outdoor space and give the appaearence of a completely new fence.
